Maybe these huge lumbering stalwarts have deliberately slowed down research and development on their products. Because lets face it, they are answerable to the shareholder, and shareholders want rewarding for their investment. Some organisations spend insane sums of money just to find out what people want, and if it can be developed and produced. The end product's price tag is therefore made up of R&D costs to try and recoup all that money spent, the production costs and a chunk of profit on top. What if these organisations could get people who really know what they want to develop the next generation of products themselves. If someone comes up with the ideal solution, the organisation just needs to buy it off them for a fraction of the cost of trying to develop it themselves. They become more competitive, and the shareholders are kept happy.

As for TransGaming inc, I think it will just be a matter of time before their Cider runs Windows games on a Mac. They have had plenty of experience with Cedega for Linux and the good people at Wine have been around a while.
