This is one of the best "personal experience" posts I've read in a long time, with great commentary. Thanks for the enlightenment!

On a personal note, Amazon and Google rule me. Period. Without them, I'd have much more time and money. But what fun would that be!

They've also got some electronics that eat flies or mice.

Overall, though, I think people don't quite grasp the humanity behind technology. AI humanoid robots are far enough into the future that we can't possibly guess what the social systems will be like. Just one-hundred years ago was 1909, and it was a whole different social atmosphere. Black people were slaves, a woman's place was in the home, homosexuals were attacked, and a great deal of animals were hunted close to extinction.

Also, when we developed the Atomic bomb, we used it once and decided that we really shouldn't use it again. Let's hope our 'first use' of whatever else comes our way turns out to be simple enough that we can survive to not use it again.

Forget technology being ambivalent about the fate of humankind. Lots of people I meet, like those officemax employees, seem rather ambivalent, too.

@Ian: Indeed, I have read the Daemon and discovered it through Jyri as well! I've since passed my copy on to Joseph Smarr, who in turns gave it to John McCrea. A frightening work, indeed!

Ever read Daemon by Scott Suarez? Jyri turned me on to it. Sobering.

It's not hard to imagine Terminators eventually doing the MPAA's door-to-door gut-checks - they are proprietary after-all.

good write up, chris. office max is a pain in the ass for sure, in fact, most in-retail customer service pales in comparison to the competitive online world & unless it changes, technology will have no choice but to take over that sector completely if it continues to slip down as it has been.

Also, 4th paragraph from the bottom:
"those of use who make possible robotics,"
