I just stumbled on this. I've previously blogged on the use ot Twitter in emergencies (such as the recent Boulder fire - see http://allhazards.blogspot.com/2010/09/twitter-in-disasters-survival-of.html ). I was wondering, has anyone considered the adoption of a hashtag for "I'm in a dire emergency and need help?" #911 or #helpme or something? There have been a few high profile cases of people tweeting themselves out of a fix

I find these projects very interesting as I have for awhile now felt that feed based parsing / processing for hashtags and other special characters is an interesting and versatile direction for social computing to go. I started a little project a year ago called Weeeble http://weeeble.com to approach this concept. I used the : to separate keywords like food, film, loc, etc... but a # works great and seems to becoming the standard. Perhaps I should revisit this project!

I suppose hashtags are a bit like microformats in that regard - best when they're simple.

It seems a pretty fundamental error when making this (over-complex) hashtag scheme for Haiti not to have done it in French.

The overuse of hashtags is incredibly annoying and distracting, and I end up just skipping tweets where every other word is a hashtag. Undoubtable Twitter linking these to search results has resulted in everyone overdoing it...it might work better if Twitter just linked one or two hashtags.

I have a hard time envisioning a situation where you need more than 1 or 2 hashtags in a 140-character message. Is it just me?
