NASA ditches IE in favor of Firefox

According to Dan Turner “NASA has given up entirely on Internet Explorer. Now every time you go to a page using IE, you get up to three prompts telling you how risky it is to run scripts. The official line is that the newest IE vulnerability was the proverbial straw, and now NASA’s standard browser is Firefox.

Announcing Flock Stamp Contest Winner

Flock Invaders

I’d like to congratulate Alberto Alvarez-Perea for his excellently far out stamp design which we will be using Flock’s postage stamp into the foreseeable future. We’ll be sending him some sweet swag (y’know, a tshirt and the like) once we get the stamps printed (of course)!

And thanks to our friends at Zazzle for hooking us up with a sweet blog post… this won’t be the first contest we do like this… in fact, anyone got any other ideas for stuff we oughtta open up to a little sporting competition?

TorCamp kicks off; Bar Camp NYC seeks a venue!

TorCamp Gets Kicked Off

TorCamp, a.k.a. Bar Camp Toronto, has gotten underway at 460 Richmond St. W. in Toronto, with a good 30 or so participants showing up thus far! They’ve got a Flickr pool up and the tag is . Can’t wait to hear how the event unfolds. Great work David!

Bar Camp NYCMeanwhile, turns out that my good buddy Amit, who’s spearheading the Bar Camp NYC effort, is in need of a venue! He’s been huntin’ and searchin’ ever since he got back from his visit to India, but now needs some help from the community at large.

Here’s what he’s looking for: On the island of Manhattan: we’re looking for an office space with wifi and 4-5 rooms, one or two larger than the rest, walls available for projectors, etc., that we can occupy for a weekend.

If you’ve got a place in mind or can at all help with emailin’ or callin’ potential candidate venues, drop Amit a note via barcamp@gmail.com. He was hoping to do this in very early December, so while this’ short notice, surely someone’s got a bit of room that they wouldn’t mind donating for use for some very eager Bar Campers!

Entertainment industry: Treat our customers like terrorists!

The newly-formed Creative and Media Business Alliance (CMBA), made up of companies such as Sony BMG, Disney, EMI, IFPI, MPA and Universal Music International, this week expressed an interest in communications traffic data so that they can more easily prosecute “intellectual property infringements”.

The Bubble Cometh (now streaming!)

Richard MacManus = Illuminati

There’s been a lot of talk about whether there is another tech or Internet bubble on the inflate. Yes, there have a been a bunch of launch parties as of late. Yes, more companies are getting funded. It’s giving the blogosphere much to ponder,. But one only has to look at the latest issue of Wired magazine to find the answer. It’s fat again! Yes, it’s a heavy ass slab this month. Compare it to say 2 or 3 years ago, during Wired’s anorexic years. I can’t remember it being this obese in years.

Of course, this is fantastic news for the budding young media empire known as Geek Entertainment Televison. There’s endless material to draw from, and draw from is what we must do. The greater the exhuberance, the more irrational we must be. Bring on the bubble! Give us the fuel we need to snark this thing. We’re up to 7 episodes now, with new ones every couple of days. Take a gander if you haven’t yet, and then subscribe to the GETV feed so you don’t have to remember to keep checking back.
