Boxely will probably be one of the coolest UI things evar

If this and this don’t get you to cream your UI shorts, you need to put down that jar of AJAX and step away from the screen. Joe Hewitt blogged about Boxely nearly a year ago and its finally looking like it might be nearing some kind of release (if only in AIM Triton).

As for what you can expect in the design of Boxely? Corey Lucier says this:

Style rules, and the triggers that dictate what visual styles are applied when – is 100% based on the state of an element. Specifically the style rules are fully attribute and property driven (e.g when hovered == true for this element apply a procedural color transform). The current complexity of cascading style engines is all due to the need for resolving ambiguity and precedence given the layering of selectors.

With Mac hardware able to boot Windows, it’s only a matter of time before we UI people assimilate the Windows desktop with stuff that actually looks, feel and behaves like the richness we’ve come to take for granted on the Mac.

…Hmm, Boxely would actually make for a pretty good topic at DCamp. Along the lines of Justin Clift’s Flame Project

Love 2.0, Microformats and OSWL podcasts

Tara and I get interviewed by Chris and PonziChris Pirillo has posted the Love Two Point Oh interview that he and Ponzi conducted at SXSW of Tara and me.

Meanwhile, Brian Oberkirch posted two interviews of me for his Weblogs WorkNotes where I discuss independents, Barcamp, Mash Pit, and WineCamp and then separately about microformats.

A million cool things

I need to get this out of my system so that I can get back to real work, but damn, there’s plenty o’ cool things in and around the web-making world lately. A sampling of what’s new and decent that you, yes you, dear reader, might check out:

In the WordPress plugin category:

In new web apps:

In the Hack MySpace corner:

In “software you haven’t heard of but should try”:

  • Pastor — still the simplest way to store your usernames, passwords and serials
  • Virtue — multiple desktops, now in active development again (r122)
  • Endo — from the 4-letter-name app creator of 1001 and Ect, a slick newsreader
  • Journler (via Greg Elin) — not the most pretty, but very functional journal (oo! with tags!)
  • Pyro — neat use of Webkit for one purpose: showing Campfire chats (via SvN)
  • Corripio — super simple tool for grabbing album artwork
  • CamiScript — add Applescript support to Camino (script repository)

Got anything you’ve come into recently that you want to pass along? Always looking for the latest and greatest, so drop a note in the comments.

Wake up, wake up, wake up

Vanity Fair has their first evar Green Issue (guess it’s never too late to go green) and an article you must read. Cliff’s Notes version: “Global warming” is the marketeer’s way of dressing up “oh shit, someday we’re going to be screwed if we don’t deal with this problem TODAY. Katrina’s proves the point; let’s call it like it is: prepare for climate chaos.

These things are new or weird in my world

AT&T - Under Surveillance

Oh, and WineCamp got a website (thanks João Antunes!), I started a Practical Microformats wiki for all you designers out there (now help me build it!) and Tara and I leave for Barcamp Bangalore on Sunday for 8 days.

…and Barcamp San Francisco is happening June 20. Want to help? Good — because we need it!

Where it’s at

Pinko Desktop Wallpaper

Or perhaps where I’ll be at… specifically, tomorrow night. Namely, at Net Squared‘s Net Tuesday event at Varnish Fine Arts. And who will be speaking? Well, my PiC for one… and my ex-boss Zack Rosen of CivicSpace and Adam Frey of Wikispaces (whom I’ve not met but heard great things about).

Not sure about the others, but Tara says she’ll be speaking about:

[convincing] non-profits to Go Pink(o) at Varnish Fine Arts. I’m going to go through some of what you’ve already read here and on the wiki and then apply the theory to non-profit marketing. Personally, I think it’s even more applicable for a not for profit campaign. When you already have an engaged sponsor-base and an enthusiastic army of volunteers, all sorts of beautiful Pinko community messaging can and will happen.

So there ya go. Your Tuesday is now apportioned!
